And summer fiction, in all of its variety and scope, often offers a much needed escape from our routine. This week, we’re bringing you a selection of astonishing short stories from our archive. In “Escape from New York,” by Zadie Smith, three legendary figures—Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, and Michael Jackson—flee the city in the wake of September 11th and embark on a road trip to the Midwest. In “Black Box,” Jennifer Egan crafts an intriguing, futuristic tale in short bites about a woman on a secret mission in the Mediterranean. (The story first ran as a series of tweets from the New Yorker Fiction Department’s Twitter account, during the spring of 2012.) Finally, in “That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French,” Stephen King writes about a couple who are enjoying their second honeymoon when the wife begins to experience an unsettling case of déjà vu.
