The end of the year always inspires a mix of feelings, but, for those of us at The New Yorker, one sentiment persists––a deep sense of gratitude to our devoted subscribers. When all is said and done—and fact-checked, copy-edited, and accompanied by brilliant art and cartoons—it is you, our readers, who make possible everything that we do. On some level, we always have you in mind as we work. Your reading, whether it is admiring or critical or both, is an inspiration. All of us at the magazine thank you for making 2023 a year of remarkable reporting, expanded cultural coverage, and some unforgettable poetry, fiction, and more. It was an extraordinary year. Criminal and civil cases proceeded against Donald Trump, even as the ex-President maintained a commanding lead in the race for the Republican nomination. Heat records melted in Phoenix, and wildfire smoke engulfed New York. Russia’s terrible war in Ukraine ground ahead, and a horrific new conflict erupted in the Middle East. The New Yorker covered those events comprehensively but also found space for stories that captured our attention in other ways. A.I. and Ozempic presented breakthroughs that could transform our lives for good and for ill; writers made provocative arguments about the detriments of travel, the future of the humanities, and a comedian’s inventions and exaggerations. Here at The New Yorker, we celebrated some important new ventures and achievements. For the first time in a single year, we published three digital-only issues, focussed on therapy, climate solutions, and interviews with an array of notable figures. This fall, we launched Critics at Large, an insightful and very funny culture podcast. And, earlier in the year, our video department received five Oscar nominations for its short documentaries and narrative films. As we turn our attention to 2024—to the Presidential election, to shifts in the cultural life of the country and the world, and to so much more—we look forward to delivering the quality and rigor, pleasure and insight you expect of us. All this stems from your attention and your generous support. So, thank you. Thank you, on behalf of everyone at The New Yorker, for subscribing. And if you are not yet a subscriber, well, we hope that you will become one. We wish you and your loved ones a happy New Year, a year of good health and good reading. As ever, David Remnick Editor, The New Yorker |
