At a clinic in Maryland, desperate patients arrive from all over the country to terminate their pregnancies. Photograph by Maggie Shannon For nearly a year, the photographer Maggie Shannon visited Partners in Abortion Care, a new clinic in College Park, Maryland, which is committed to providing abortion care in all trimesters of pregnancy. Since opening, in October of 2022, the clinic has treated nearly five hundred patients, ranging in age from eleven to fifty-three, whose experiences reveal the immense challenges that many women face when seeking an abortion in post-Roe America. Shannon found that a surprising number of patients were willing to be photographed. As Margaret Talbot writes in an introduction to a collection of these images, “Many of them wanted others to understand how the obstacles placed in the way of abortion care had pushed their procedures later and later.” Support The New Yorker’s award-winning journalism.
